Signs You May Have Insect Damage on Your Rug

Last updated 8 months ago

Insects that trespass onto your property are almost always searching for food. Most of these insects head straight to your pantry, kitchen trash can, or anywhere else in your home where they detect the presence of human food scraps. Others will make their way to certain fabrics in your home. Oriental rugs should be inspected frequently for the following signs of insect damage, as they can provide moths, carpet beetles, and silverfish with ideal breeding and dining conditions:

Damaged Fibers
Any unexplained fiber damage should be examined closely for the presence of insects. Be it dye that looks a bit off in color or threading that has been uprooted, damaged fibers are an indication that unwanted visitors are not only in your home, but chomping away at your cherished Oriental rug.

Dark Spots
If carpet beetles or silverfish are feasting on your Oriental rug, they are also likely to be digesting their food on or near your rug and leaving miniscule signs behind. The feces of these insects may look like small grains of carpeting material or sawdust, so inspect your rugs closely when searching for signs of an infestation.

“Shaved” Sections
Some rug-chewing insects dine their way through Oriental rug surfaces in a trail-like fashion. If sections of your rug appear to be shaved, you may have a silverfish infestation. Silverfish are small creatures, and these “shaved” trails are likely to be small as well.

Fuzzy Cylinders
If you spot any fuzzy- or hairy-looking cylinders on your rug, you may have moth larvae or cocoons on your Oriental rug. If you think moth larvae are living and feeding on your rug, call a professional for repairs immediately.

Some forms of insect damage do not become apparent on rugs until they are brushed, vacuumed, or similarly handled. This is just one of many reasons why you should hire a professional to clean your Oriental rugs a couple of times each year. The earlier the presence of insects is detected, the easier and less expensive it will be to have your rugs restored to their original splendor. To arrange to have your rug treated or repaired by a cleaning professional in the Richmond area, call Hadeed-Mercer Rug Cleaning at (804) 358-3811.
